The City of Alcoa announced today that it will offer electronics recycling to City of Alcoa residents at the City’s Service Center located at 725 Universal Street. This same service will be provided all other Blount County residents at the Alcoa / Maryville / Blount County Landfill, also operated by the City of Alcoa, located at 240 Long Powers Road.

Residential electronic scrap items include computers, computer monitors, televisions, printers, keyboards, mice, scanners, fax machines, telephone handsets, VCRs, cellular phones without batteries and other small consumer electronics.

• For Alcoa residents, the Service Center is open every Tuesday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. except holidays. Items may be dropped off at the receptionist’s desk inside the building’s main lobby. Proof of Alcoa residency (driver’s license, etc.) will be required.
• The Landfill is open Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Customers should arrive by 5:00 p.m.

Computers and other household electronics contain hazardous materials that require proper disposal. These materials may be recovered and recycled when properly processed. "This program, using the services of Creative Recycling Systems, provides a responsible alternative to disposal in the landfill that is safe and environmentally-friendly," said Kenny Wiggins, Director of Public Works and Engineering. “While we encourage residents to remove all personal information from their computers, these will be processed by CRS in a manner that will ensure no data may be recovered and misused.”

Most any household electronic corded item will be accepted with the exception of larger appliances. “As a general rule, if it has a cord or is battery-powered and you can carry it in, we will take it,” Wiggins said. A list of acceptable items can be found on the City’s website at www.cityofalcoa-tn.gov.
