03/11/2011    City of Alcoa to Close Recycling Drop-Off Center

The City of Alcoa’s recycling drop-off center located at the Springbrook Road / East Edison Street intersection will close March 31, 2011. An exception to this closure is the waste-oil tank. It will be maintained for the use of do-it-yourself mechanics.

The drop-off center was opened in 1992 adjacent to the old fire station. Originally constructed for the use and benefit of Alcoa residents, the center continued to operate after citywide curbside recycling started in 1995 even though the vast majority of its users have been non-Alcoa residents. The decision to close the center was brought about by the need to replace the 19-year old roll-off containers at a cost of at least $8,000 each.

Questions regarding the closure may be directed to the Alcoa Public Works & Engineering Department at 380-4800 or 380-4815.
